They end with the main character almost universally suffering some sort of great harm, only to barely escape and live to tell others about it. Well, that same main character, the one in the above story, that’s me. I’m the guy who (unknowingly) made horrible decision after horrible decision, survived, and now I’m here to tell you about them. Not because college is hard. And not because money is hard. To the contrary, sometimes they can be deceptively easy. That’s where the danger lies. Today, I’m going to share with you five lessons I wish I’d learned about paying for college, so you don’t make the any of the same ghastly mistakes I did. Do Your Homework This should go without saying, but it’s something that I, and many like me, never did. You see, I had parents that were enablers. They were beyond kind, and they loved me dearly, but they didn’t do me any favors by not including me in a more meaningful way when it came to obtaining my student loans. Students, listen to your parents. They have life experience that will prove invaluable when discussing the intricacies of your loans. Parents, involve your students. Giving them access to â€Å"easy† money is a missed opportunity for conveying the gravity of what they’re undertaking. This is the mandatory first step for everyone involved educate yourselves on the differences between college grants, financial aid and student loans, and scholarships. Simply getting into the college of your dreams is exhausting. Hours upon hours of applications can drain the life out of you. But don’t grow weary and accept the first money offered to you without fully understanding the interest rates, origination fees, and repayment schedule associated with it. Knowledge is power. Fully understanding the moving parts of your loan, specifically what is happening your interest and principal balances while you’re in school, will go a long way in guiding your repayment strategy. I let my student loans accumulate an additional $25,000 in interest while in school because I was naà ¯ve to the fact compound interest can apparently work against you, too. An avoidable mistake I could have mitigated (or even eliminated) by simply making small payments while in school. While financial circumstances among college attendees are not all the same, I made mine worse by taking absolutely no initiative when it came to paying for college outside of student loans. To be fair, there wasn’t much for me to really do. My mother did me the enormous favor of helping get all of my student loans (all $114,101.59 of them) squared away before ever setting foot on campus each semester. I don’t mean that sarcastically either. It truly was a huge help. The huge downside was that it kept me in the dark to the reality playing out behind the scenes. You don’t know what you don’t know. Unfortunately, students loans were my only option. Due to my parents’ income, I wasn’t eligible for any other type of financial aid and there was really no money saved to pay for me to attend college. This is not a great position to be in. My parents’ great credit history enabled me to overcome this catch-22. By leveraging it, I immediately became eligible for every loan I applied for despite no credit history of my own all because they co-signed. It truly was â€Å"easy† money. (I don’t think my parent’s even fully understood the financial risk they were taking on. They, like so many Americans, assumed that once I graduated from college, I’d just pay the loans back). But having access to easy money didn’t stop after four years at a popular state university. It took me four and half years, and then, given my relatively restrictive choice in major (biology), I made the unenviable choice to go back and get my associate’s degree in nursing – and then back again for my bachelor’s in nursing. Nine total years of deferred payments. Nine total years of deferred interest. $100,000+ in loans that landed me an entry-level job making $36,000/year. Now, looking back, I’ve realized what wasn’t painfully obvious then: I should have thoroughly researched available grants. I should have looked for and applied to applicable scholarships. I should have left no stone unturned. Anything to reduce what became almost four years’ worth of salary. Be unashamed in your avoidance of student loans. Then, when you have no other options, use them to fund the difference. You see, I had the opportunity in high school to accumulate significant college credit due to AP classes. I even took AP classes to take advantage of GPA benefits – up to 5.0 on a traditional 4.0 scale. What I did not do, however, was actually take the AP exams to get the college credit. That is the epitome of stupid. Apparently my Saturday afternoon plans back in high school were more important. If understand the extra workload associated with AP classes, and are comfortable in taking it on, consider taking classes you know might benefit you later. Sciences, English, math, and even foreign languages – nearly all of them are stepping stones to a college degree. Be responsible with your course load, but even a few credits carrying over can save you thousands of dollars. And where AP classes fall short, you can pick up those credits by attending community college. At nearly â…“ the cost of the average state university, any credit you acquire towards a planned degree can result in large cost savings. Possible ways to receive college credit while in high school (or before college): Dual enrollment programs. May vary widely by state depending on pre-arranged relationships with local community colleges (some classes can be taken online, at local campuses, and even within your high school itself during your normally scheduled hours). Take college classes (at a local community college) while in high school. This will again vary by state but some students may choose to fast-track their college experience by taking classes at night, on weekends, or even the summer before a traditional degree program begin. If you have your heart set on a four-year school, consider finding a local community college and looking at their transfer guide. With dual enrollment, you can knock out dozens of credit hours at a fraction of the cost, helping to reduce your loan principal by possibly tens of thousands of dollars. Related: Paying for a Brand Name College or Not? Dont Apply to the Wrong School Part of the reason I wasn’t able to finish within a four year time frame was the roundabout way I approached my degree. I started off on the wrong foot by applying to the wrong â€Å"school. Let me clarify: The college I attended was fine; it was the school within the school where I chose wrong I applied to University Studies. Alias: undecided. Aka, no school at all. At the particular college I attended, you were required to apply to individual schools within the college to officially pursue a degree. For instance, if you wanted to become an engineer, you applied to the School of Engineering. If you didn’t explicitly declare a major, you were placed into a University Studies degree program which allowed you to â€Å"explore† several different degree programs. This, however, is a bit of a trap because it leads you to take more classes (and spend more money) than you would have had you declared a major earlier. For example, I got the brilliant idea that during the first two years of school (of my proposed four-year experience), I was going to take all the prerequisites required to get into my school’s respective Business, Engineering, and Science colleges. That way, when I finally figured out what I wanted to do with my life, I could select the school that made the most sense for me. That’s a super great idea in theory. Until you’re way behind in every. Single. Program. About halfway through my sophomore year I finally settled on majoring in biology. Since I hadn’t taken all of the biology classes most declared majors would have up until that point, I decided to take summer classes to catch up. A few summer sessions later I had closed the gap, but still had to take a higher than average course load throughout my junior year to fully catch up. You see where the student loan addiction is starting to come in? Easy money made it easy to keep taking classes while the bills kept racking up. Not everyone knows what they want to do in life by the time they turn 18. And if you end up switching majors, that’s okay. But have some semblance of a plan for what you want to do. Throwing dirt at the wall and hoping something sticks is definitely not the right the approach when it comes to taking college classes. It winds up being some really, really expensive dirt. Lastly, Consider Getting a Job Or a side hustle. Anything you can reasonably do to generate income while you’re in school. Look for common sense ways to save money. Anything you can do to start stashing away money beyond the everyday expenses you need to get through school. Think of it as a retirement fund for paying back your school loans. The account is made of lava and you’re not allowed to touch it – unless it’s to pay off interest or loan principal. Now, that said, work shouldn’t get in the way of classes. Your primary â€Å"job† is to complete your degree to the best of your ability so that you’re well-positioned to hit the job market running. A few hundred dollars coming in each month will give you extra breathing room, but trading work for school defeats the purpose of higher education in the first place. Start slow and set firm work/hour boundaries with your boss. If your time management skills hold tough, you can gradually increase your hours to continue helping offset the cost of college. In Review Being shielded from the student loan process pulled the proverbial wool over my eyes to how to world really works. I ended up taking the â€Å"out of sight, out of mind† approach to my loans and that proved costly. When it was all said and done, I had earned two bachelor’s degrees, but I paid an additional $25,108.59 in interest and the balance only stayed that low because I was exceptionally aggressive about paying them off. But it didn’t have to be that hard. I made a lot of very avoidable mistakes. Choosing loan-only funding opportunities, picking the wrong â€Å"school†, changing majors, and going for far too many semesters it all added up. The Right to Fight Achieving Gender Equality on the Battlefield Essay

Abstract: Warfare has for centuries been the sole province of men, providing a rite of passage for male-dominated societies the world over.   The notion that women can function as soldiers – and that fighting units can function with women – is a new one, but there is ample evidence to show that women belong in combat and that the team concept that is so important to a fighting unit is not threatened by gender integration. The Right to Fight: Achieving Gender Equality on the Battlefield Warfare has always been, with only very limited exceptions, the work of men.   No modern society relies, and virtually no premodern society relied, on women as combat soldiers. – Kingsley Browne. Since Homer’s time, warfare has been the definitive male rite of passage.   It is so inextricably linked to the essence of what it means to be a man in Western society that nothing is comparable.   Symbols can be powerful cultural markers, and the spear of Ares and the mirror of Aphrodite are still profoundly important tokens of gender identity.   That identity means that women behave according to their feminine nature, and men act based on their masculine impulses.   In America, sports reinforce the same basic message that many primitive societies imparted to their young men: a male could not claim status as a man until he had distinguished himself in battle (Browne, 2007). Today, women have achieved equality in many fields of endeavor that once were the sole province of men.   The most notable among these is warfare.   Women advanced into battle, shoulder-to-shoulder with their male compatriots, risking death and dismemberment in Iraq, Afghanistan and other hot spots.   Men and women have not changed significantly, at least not physically.   Yet technology has had a profound impact on the nature of combat.   High-tech weaponry, and a higher-than-ever degree of specialization in modern armed forces have made it possible, even desirable, for women to contribute on the battlefield and behind the scenes.   More importantly, these new opportunities have made it possible for women to show what they can do in the line of fire.   The result of all this is that women are integral to America’s armed forces, a situation that would have been inconceivable just a few decades ago. In Co-ed Combat: The New Evidence that Women Shouldn’t Fight the Nation’s Wars, Kinsgley Browne argues that the secret to esprits de corps, that â€Å"x factor† that determines how well soldiers fight as a unit, is good, old-fashioned male bonding.   Soldiers who are under fire risk their lives together, which creates a special psychological link that is uniquely male.   â€Å"A striking feature of men’s wartime memoirs is the deep emotional connection they display toward their comrades, a connection often compared favorably in strength to the male-female bond† (Browne, 2007).   This is an ancient tradition, one that characterized the Greek hoplite units that marched in lock-step, one soldier protecting with his shield the exposed flank of the infantryman next to him.   Of course, the â€Å"male-female bond† had a meaning of its own within the Greek fighting units where homosexuality was considered beneficial in the sense that it stre ngthened the bond between soldiers. Other observers take a different view of the bonding factor.   One school of thought asserts that the kind of inter-personal relationships implied in male bonding are actually counter-productive from a military standpoint.   The â€Å"team† concept that military organizations seek to inculcate are businesslike in nature.   Instead, it is argued that â€Å"task-bonding† is the ideal for which the military strives because it fosters relationships within the context of teamwork (Fenner and DeYoung, 2001).   Within this definition, women not only have a place but may be necessary in that the team requires multiple talents and characteristics to reach its full functional potential.   â€Å"To be successful, the sum of their efforts must be greater than their individual efforts.   Team members should not all be the same size and have the same skills if the team is to be successful† (Ibid). Thus, the old notion that male bonding is essential to the functioning of a fighting unit breaks down according to a more modern definition of â€Å"team.†Ã‚   This is also true in team sports, which have for decades been integrated.   Women take part in team sports at the high school and college levels at a higher rate than ever before.   (Watching the U.S. women’s soccer team compete in the World Cup, it is hard to believe that anyone could harbor skepticism about women forming tight bonds in a competitive environment.)   Today, women are professional soccer and basketball players.   Not only are females capable of competing at a remarkably high level, they are capable of competing alongside men.   In this, we can see that bonding does not necessarily have to break down along gender lines, that there is not necessarily an overwhelming sexual polarity at work in the team dynamic (Fenner and DeYoung, 2001). Of course, the most important examples are to be found within the military itself.   There are numerous examples of men and women bonding as combat colleagues capable of collaborating strictly as soldiers for the greater good of unit and country.   In fact, studies have shown that the more stressful the situation, the more successfully men and women come together as soldiers† (Ibid).   A study of male and female students at the U.S. Air Force Academy revealed that students form relationships that are well worth maintaining once they enter the service.   â€Å"These young men and women bond so strongly†¦that their leaders know it will be problematic if they cannot transfer primary loyalty to the larger institution and the military mission in general to uphold the Constitution† (Ibid). So much for male female friendships in school and training but what happens when men and women come together in the most critical combat situations?   Can men function without feeling as though they need to protect women in their command, and doesn’t that dynamic threaten the safety of all concerned?   According to many military experts, the presence of women in a combat unit makes no appreciable difference.   â€Å"The general concept of women in the infantry is that the squad bonds,† said Army Major Mary Finch. â€Å"If women train with their units, the members will know she can and will do her job†¦The guys will accommodate her† (Skaine, 1999).   Others say the nature of modern warfare and the weapons used to prosecute it effectively takes gender out of the equation.   High-tech artillery and highly accurate surface-to-surface missiles make men and women soldiers equally vulnerable and indiscriminate targets (Ibid). For others, it’s a simple matter of motivation.   Women who are inspired to fight for their country do so for the same reason as men and should be respected for their choice.   Young women want to go to college, learn job skills and accrue benefits just as young men do and are willing to do their hitch and assume the same risks.   They also pay the same price when things don’t go as planned.   When SPC Christine Mayes was killed, her fiancà ©e commented that her situation was no more or less remarkable than any other soldier, and that her gender had nothing to do with it.   When it came down to it, she was a soldier killed in action in the Gulf War.   â€Å"She didn’t really want to be over there any more than the rest of them, but that’s what she got paid for; that’s what she did† (Ibid.)   Nevertheless, it’s still difficult for many not to distinguish between men and women soldiers when it comes to battlefield casualti es. Operation Desert Shield/Sword marked a kind of turning point for women in combat.   Officially speaking, women did not serve in â€Å"combat† positions, though there were women casualties.   The media has been, in general, remarkably slow to express widespread support for women in combat, reflecting what may be called the general opinion of the public at large.   Part of the struggle, admittedly, has been the media’s reticence when it comes to overlooking the image of women as wives/mothers/caregivers.   As recently as the Gulf War the press was guilty of this kind of objectivization, categorizing women who sincerely desired to serve alongside men.   Images in the media at the time showed â€Å"these battle-dressed ‘mommies’ tearfully hugging their babies good-bye, sensationalized sexual activities between men and women in the field, and exaggerated pregnancy rates among deployed servicewomen† (Simon, 2001).   At best, they were labeled à ¢â‚¬Å"damagers of readiness;† at worst â€Å"sexual distractions† (Ibid). This unfortunate state of affairs has its roots firmly in the 20th century.   Women have been present in combat situations for centuries, but World War II brought them into contact with life-threatening situations at an unprecedented level.   More than 400 American women died in circumstances termed â€Å"non-combat,† and women made contributions on many levels other than nursing or logistical support.   Women served as interpreters, interrogators and as intelligence operatives, often in life-threatening situations.   Nevertheless, after the war men remained steadfastly against, even hostile toward, the very suggestion that women might be assets in combat situations.   Women who served with distinction in the Pacific were denied medals because it angered men.   They were called â€Å"whores† or â€Å"lesbians† (Skaine, 1999). Events from recent years cannot be said to have helped the situation.   The Tailhook incident from 1991 probably set the cause of women in the military back 10 years.   Well-publicized attempts to integrate women in venerable all-male military institutions, such as VMI and The Citadel, were horrific examples of gender discrimination, yet reinforced among many the feeling that women don’t belong in traditional male military roles.   If females couldn’t handle the hazing or the rigorous male code at The Citadel, the thinking went, how could they be expected to hold up under actual fire?   Operation Desert Shield/Storm helped change the paradigm, though even at that the military establishment resisted U.S. Rep. Pat Schroeder’s recommendation that some women be assigned to combat situations.   Schroeder’s ideas were turned down, with policy setters insisting that the military was no place to conduct a â€Å"social experiment† and certainly not in life-and-death combat scenarios (Skaine, 1999). Integration has, of course, become a fact of life but it can’t be considered a â€Å"slam dunk.†Ã‚   In spite of the advantages to be derived from women serving in the military, it still represents a major change in the military’s modus operandi, and a fundamental change in philosophy.   Statistics bear out the fact that it has been anything but a seamless transition.   Since gender integration, attrition rates for first-term Army soldiers have reached record highs (Simon, p. 137).   Attrition sat at about 20 percent in the early1990s; after integration, that figure reached 37 percent in 1996 and was flirting with 50 percent by the year 2000 (Ibid).   â€Å"In the Army, overwhelming data on attrition rates refutes the conclusions of soldier surveys that suggest gender integration is a military success. (Ibid).   Other symptoms include domestic violence and sexual imposition, though these have not amounted to chronic problems. In many ways, the military mirrors the customs and prejudices of the society from which it is drawn.   As such, it is not surprising that there should be difficulties creating a gender-integrated fighting force that protects a country that harbors gender-sensitive perspectives in so many walks of life.   As long as it’s taken to bring gender equality to America’s military, the most constructive view may be that it has happened at all.   Civil rights weren’t a reality for African-Americans until more than a century after the Civil War, but it did finally come about.   Winston Churchill once said that Americans always do the right thing after exhausting every other possible alternative.   One may say that women were given the opportunity to show what they can do in combat only after nearly every excuse for not including them was proposed.   If that is the case, then justice was served when women were given the right to serve.
